NHS bone cement shortage is likely to cancel and delay joint surgeries

19 February 2026 Arthritis UK

On 18 February, NHS England announced that there is a global supply shortage of a medical cement used for hip and knee replacement surgery.

The shortage is due to a halt in production from the main supplier, the German firm Heraeus Medical, which provides the NHS with three-quarters of their bone cement.

The shortages will impact hospitals in England, and we're monitoring the situation closely in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We are seeking further clarification in the devolved nations.

NHS England has advised hospitals to prioritise emergency patients and allocate resources to those in the most pain, or with the most complex conditions.

This issue is likely to lead to cancellations and delays for many people with arthritis who are expecting orthopaedic surgery, increasing the already unacceptably long waiting list. We understand that this could be worrying time for those in our community who are currently waiting for joint replacement surgery. Arthritis UK is here to support anybody impacted by the announcement. We provide guidance, advice and services which can be accessed through Get help.

Hospitals have been asked to keep patients fully informed if waiting time will be extended or if surgery requires rescheduling as a result. Patients are advised to attend their surgical appointments unless told otherwise by their hospital and not to assume their appointment is cancelled. If people are experiencing pain, and are not yet on a waiting list, they should still visit their doctor. It’s important that people get into the system.

Deborah Alsina MBE, Chief Executive of Arthritis UK, said:

“This is a crushing blow for those individuals who have finally made it to the front of the orthopaedic surgery queue after a long time waiting.

“We trust health leaders will work hard to address the supply issues given the impact on those waiting in pain whose lives are left on hold. Aside from the personal toll on people with arthritis, the stakes are high for our governments who have an uphill challenge to bring down waiting lists to meet ambitious targets.

“As this news breaks, we urge hospitals to communicate quickly with those affected to avoid additional worry and uncertainty. We are also offering support to anyone concerned about the impact of these delays through our free helpline and online community, where they can access information and advice while they wait for the surgery they so desperately need.”
