Training and development

We are committed to supporting our staff to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies they need to carry out their role and deliver on our strategic priorities.

Core skills and knowledge

We have a comprehensive programme of mandatory training for new starters, which provides an introduction to the people, culture and practice at Arthritis UK. This includes Data Protection, Diversity & Inclusion, Anti-racism, Safeguarding, Cyber Security, Health and Safety, Disability Awareness and Whistleblowing. We also offer ICT skills training for new starters, as well as support throughout the year, including OneNote, Office 365, and Microsoft Teams.

Management and Leadership

Our mandatory Management Development Programme covers a wide range of areas to support People Managers in their role, including essential management skills, strategy and innovation, managing performance, building teams, and managing and communicating change. We also offer all staff the opportunity to build leadership skills through our Aspiring Managers and Action based Leadership modules. These programmes are complemented with peer support learning sessions for managers and staff.

Skills development

Throughout the year we offer staff the opportunity to build their skills in specialist areas including Project Management, Procurement, Mental Health Awareness, Facilitation and Presentation Skills. Staff are also able to access a wide range of eLearning opportunities through our Learning Management System and LinkedIn Learning to support their personal and professional development.

Formal and informal training courses are, of course, just one aspect of an employee’s development. Through Annual Performance Reviews, personal development plans and 1-1s, other opportunities for development can be explored including coaching, mentoring, shadowing, attending external networks and conferences, and taking part in development projects.
